The Breath…..

Breathing is something we all take for granted; however, if we can harness the power, the benefits to our body are outstanding. It is a drug-free, side-effect-free solution to common stress and mood problems. Studies have shown a positive effect on depression, anxiety, insomnia, and trauma-induced emotions and behaviors. Hundreds of different breaths exist, and there is no wrong way to it; it is only a matter of discovering which breath sequence works for you and your circumstance. I have attended over 100 births, and one thing I have heard at every single one is the direction for the birthing person to breathe their baby down. This is highly beneficial if you know how to do it. That’s where I come in.

Commonly Asked Questions…………….

What is Breathwork?

  • What is Breathwork? In simplest terms, it is the technique of using your breath with intention. It is the foundation of every mindfulness practice and is available to everyone. That is the greatest thing about this. It is the power that you have at your disposal every single day and is often something that we don’t give a lot of thought to. Through research done worldwide, we are learning that this practice has many health benefits.

  • What are the benefits? When we breathe consciously and with purpose, the mind slows down. That causes a sense of relief, allowing us to pause and self-regulate. Breathwork puts the brakes on our brain’s acute stress response. By targeting the body’s relaxation response, deep abdominal breathing helps reduce blood pressure. The list of benefits is truly amazing! Studies show that it helps with mood management, physical performance, clarity and focus, sleep, pain, and one’s overall well-being.

  • How does it work? The human body comprises around 37.2 trillion cells, all needing oxygen to survive. Breathing is an air exchange or pulling in oxygen and letting it out to relieve the body of CO2. It is an effort made by several muscles, including the diaphragm, and intercostal muscles, to shape the thoracic cavity so that air is pulled into our lungs. Corresponding muscles, along with the elastic properties of the affected tissues, assist with air back out. This cycle happens, mostly unconsciously, around 12 times a minute. Our breathing is regulated by the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for bodily functions that do not require conscious direction. That being said, breathing is the only bodily autonomic function that we can also consciously direct.

Breath for Birth Workers

I attended my first birth over 20 years ago, and one fact remains: I hear the same thing from birth teams. They are trying to teach birthing people how to push AS THEY ARE PUSHING. This is the worst possible time to teach someone a new skill. I have studied breathwork for 20 years, and there is a better way. You can learn how to prepare your clients before they are in labor. We will learn how to teach clients to use their pelvic floor and core canister paired with their breath to make space, move their baby down, and they can reset the nervous system. Classes resume in March 2025.

Nutrition

Pre and post natal nutrition class. What you eat matters.

One thing I know is true. There needs to be more nutrition information out there. I’ll help you sort out the myths. You will leave this class with a clear understanding of what you need to consume and how many calories, and understand what your body and baby need from a nutritional standpoint. When birthing people leave their appointments, I often hear them say things like adding folic acid, ensuring you get enough iron and many other ambiguous directions. People need specific, evidence-based nutritional information that is not complicated. You will leave this class with comprehensive information that you can apply immediately. This class resumes in March 2025.

Pre/Post-nATAL nUTRITION cONSULT

There is a lot of confusing information, and knowing if you are getting all the nutrients you need can be hard. This is a 90-minute appointment where we will go over all the nutritional information you will need to ensure that you are giving yourself and your baby all the nutrients you need to grow a healthy baby and can help you feel your best. If you are postpartum, we will cover all the information you need to heal your body and learn what you can eat that transfers via breastmilk. You will leave knowing how to put meals together, what to add, and an easy way to grocery shop. We will discuss food to stay away from and add to your diet. Hint….the stay-away list is much smaller than you think. Let me help you take the guesswork out of eating for two. (You don’t need to eat for two) You will feel confident and know you are giving your baby the best possible start. $99 for 60min.

We will cover everything from natural childbirth birthing in a birth center to induction with or without pain medication. Here’s the difference. We are also going to cover the biomechanics of birth. Learn why position matters. Learn how to use your breath to reset the nervous system and create space in your core. Learn about the importance of your pelvic floor and how to use it in the birth process effectively. I can’t wait for you to join me! Group classes to resume in June of 2024. If you would like a private, one-on-one childbirth education consult to see if I would be a good fit, schedule a consult below to learn more.
